Student Spotlight: Exploring Identity, Ambiguity and Light

Liv B, a Stage 1 Digital Communication Solutions student, has demonstrated a thoughtful and visually compelling approach in her recent body of work, drawing clear inspiration from the photographic practice and techniques of Bill Henson. Engaging deeply with Henson’s signature style, Liv explores themes of transition, ambiguity, and identity.

Her work is particularly notable for its sophisticated use of lighting. Embracing chiaroscuro techniques, Liv carefully manipulates contrast between light and shadow to create these images. Subjects emerge from darkness, partially illuminated, inviting the viewer to question what is revealed and what remains concealed. This deliberate obscurity reflects a strong conceptual understanding of Henson’s exploration of the human condition, where meaning is often found in uncertainty rather than clarity.

Liv’s compositions also demonstrate a cinematic quality. She frames her subjects in a way that suggests narrative without explicitly defining it, allowing each image to exist as a fragment of a larger, unseen story. This open-endedness encourages personal interpretation, aligning with Henson’s practice of evoking mood and atmosphere over direct storytelling. Her careful attention to setting—often choosing subdued, natural, or dimly lit environments—further enhances the dreamlike quality of her work.

Overall, Liv’s response demonstrates both an understanding of and respect for her source of inspiration, while maintaining her own emerging artistic voice. Her work successfully channels the evocative, painterly qualities associated with Bill Henson, while exploring themes that are personally and contextually relevant.

We can’t wait to see what Liv produces next in her Stage 1 Digital Communication Solutions journey!
